BRIEF HISTORY OF SÄNGERFEST

The Australischer Sängerbund Sängerfest is a triennial song festival of German speaking choirs in Australia.

The ‘First Festival of German Song’ in Australia was founded and hosted by Liedertafel Arion and held in Melbourne on May 2, 1970 to celebrate their 110th Anniversary. Three choirs participated – Arion Liedertafel, Adelaider Liedertafel 1858 and Männerchor Sanssouci 1963 Wollongong. In 1972 the Second Festival of German Song was again hosted by Arion Liedertafel with six choirs participating. This was such a great success that the choir leaders agreed to have a Festival of German Song every two to three years and it became the highlight of every German speaking choir.

The Austrian Choir’s first involvement in the festivals was at Tanunda, South Australia in June 1991 where the event was hosted by the Tanunda Liedertafel. Since then the Choir has taken part in every Sängerfest leading up to the one being celebrated at the Harmonie German Club in Canberra this year.

In 2014 the Austrian Choir hosted a record seventeen choirs from all over Australia for the German song festival. Alas, due to the dwindling number of members, many of the choirs have folded and thus only eight of them are participating at this years’ event.

Although there will only be a reduced gathering this time, the event will still have all the pomp and ceremony of past festivals.
